At first I thought it was my lens, but apparently it's the entire fucking camera. The focus is way off, and it will not focus where I tell it to.

Granted, doing such small work you're bound to get this occasionally... but I just did a shoot of about 317 pics, and two were in focus. I never remember it being this bad. I always focus on their eyes, and it just won't focus on anything but their chest, or behind them. Does this happen a lot when you do macro stuff without a macro lens? I have a macro function lens, but that's not its sole purpose. I dunno. I'm so sick of it.

It's going to cost a fucking fortune if I take it to the shop and have it sent away through them, I can just tell. It'll be away for weeks. I know it will, because I was the sales assistant who had to deal with grumpy customers complaining that their camera had been away for 8 weeks.

It's my own fault, I'm not gentle with it. But still. This is my outlet. I'm going to wither away and die.

WAY TO BE SO NEGATIVE.
I've emailed a repair store for a estimate, hopefully they can do it and it won't take a long time. I paid $1200 for the camera, which leaves me a large margin as to how much I'll pay to get it fixed. I just hope it won't cost a million ;~;

Y'know...in my professional opinion, I think it's just your camera getting back at you for always focusing on eyes...you KNOW it's caused nothing but trouble among the fangirls D:

Oh dear, I'm thinking taking away your camera would be like not letting me write.

aka: BLASPHEMY.

So, I hope you can get it repaired soon and be back to your normal, photo-happy self!

Has it always been like that or it started recently?

All lenses have minimum focusing distance. Even macro lenses need a minimum distance. If you're closer than that, then it ignores the object you're trying to focus on, and it's looking for something else in the frame. Granted, if you set the camera to "Selective focus point" (I think Pentax SRL should have it, my Nikon does) instead of "Closest object in frame", then you simply won't be able to take a picture on AF until you move to minimum focusing distance from the object that's in your selected focus point.

There's another thing too. If you have a fast lens and shooting wide open, then locking the focus on eyes and moving the camera to reframe the shoot might shift the focus elsewhere. Because DOF is very little at F1.8 and smaller and moving the camera just a few cm may shift the focus.

It's only started recently, which is why I'm worrying. Even when I'm using my selective focus, on a tripod, it'll focus on his hand, or his chest, or whatever it wants to.

I dunnooo ;~; I thought it may have been my macro lens, but it's happening with my 18-55mm, which I've never had a problem with.

Try switching to manual focus and see if it helps. Oh and you you could test it with longer distance. Set the focusing point on something, say, 3 feet away, and then on something 10 feet away. If it's working fine for longer distance, then I think it's just it - you're trying to focus on stuff that's too close to the lens.
Also if you're normally locking the focus and reframing, try not to. See if it makes any difference.

What kind of camera do you have? I have a Canon XT, and there is an annoying dial next to the eyepiece with a plus and minus next to it. Look through and hit the button so you can see the meetering inside, if that is blurry, adjust the little dial until it is in focus... Then you should be able to focus everything again.

Had the same damned thing happen to me once. Drove me crazy. It was because my fiance has different vision than I do and changed it to his preference...

:D
